How Healthy Forests Create Better Deer Habitat

When most hunters think about good deer habitat, they often picture food plots, agricultural fields, thick cover, or a well-traveled trail leading to a favorite hunting location. But some of the most important whitetail habitat in Wisconsin is created through something much broader: healthy, diverse forests.
A healthy forest isn't simply a large stand of mature trees. The best wildlife habitat often contains a mixture of young growth, mature trees, shrubs, openings, wetlands, brushy edges, and other vegetation. Together, these areas provide the food, cover, bedding areas, and travel corridors deer need throughout the year.
Managing forests with wildlife in mind can benefit not only white-tailed deer, but also grouse, turkeys, songbirds, pollinators, small mammals, and countless other species that depend on Wisconsin's woodlands.
Young Forests Provide Valuable Food and Cover
One of the most valuable—and sometimes overlooked—parts of deer habitat is young forest growth.
When areas of a forest regenerate following natural disturbances or responsible forest management, sunlight reaches the forest floor. New trees, shrubs, grasses, and other plants begin growing, creating dense vegetation within a deer's reach.
This young vegetation can provide both browse and protective cover. Wisconsin DNR describes forest regeneration as an important part of maintaining the long-term health, composition, and productivity of Wisconsin forests.
Young forests can also create excellent bedding and escape cover. Dense vegetation allows deer to move and rest while remaining concealed.
A forest made entirely of mature trees may look impressive, but without enough understory vegetation and regeneration, it may provide considerably less food and cover at ground level.

Deer are browsers, meaning much of their natural diet comes from the leaves, buds, stems, and shoots of woody plants and other vegetation.

Forest management practices that encourage healthy regeneration can increase the availability of this natural food source.
However, balance is important.
Too many deer using the same area can place excessive pressure on young plants. Wisconsin DNR monitors the effects of deer browsing on forest regeneration because heavy browsing can prevent certain tree and plant species from successfully regenerating.
That relationship illustrates an important conservation principle: healthy deer populations and healthy forests depend on one another.
Good habitat helps support deer, while responsible deer management helps ensure forests can continue producing the next generation of trees and vegetation.
Edge Habitat Brings Different Habitats Together
Take a walk-through good deer country and you'll often notice that deer activity isn't limited to the middle of a field or deep inside a forest.
Many heavily traveled areas occur where habitats meet.
A wooded edge next to grassland, brush, wetland, or agricultural land gives wildlife access to several resources within a relatively small area. Deer may feed in one habitat while using nearby woodland or brush for security and bedding.

Recent Wisconsin DNR deer research has shown that deer habitat preferences change throughout the year. Deer in the study generally preferred forest habitat year-round, while their use of agricultural land, grassland, pasture, and forest edges changed with the seasons as food and cover conditions changed.
That is why habitat diversity can be so valuable.
Instead of trying to create one "perfect" habitat, conservation efforts can focus on maintaining a landscape containing several complementary habitat types.
Mast-Producing Trees Are an Important Part of the Forest
Mature forests also play an essential role.

Oak trees and other mast-producing plants provide seasonal food for deer and numerous other wildlife species. Acorns can become an especially valuable fall food source when available.
Protecting mature mast-producing trees while also encouraging younger forest growth can help create a more diverse woodland.
The goal doesn't have to be choosing between an old forest and a young forest.
In many situations, wildlife benefits from having both.
Mature trees provide food, structure, shade, and shelter, while younger areas provide browse and dense cover closer to the ground.
Cover Matters in Every Season
Deer habitat needs change throughout the year.
During spring and summer, forest vegetation can provide cover for does and young fawns. During fall, deer may move between feeding areas, wooded travel corridors, and thicker security cover.
Winter creates another challenge.

Wisconsin DNR research has found that during the non-breeding winter period, deer
using forests tended to move farther from forest edges and deeper into wooded habitat, likely seeking better protection from wind and snow as well as suitable bedding areas.
Maintaining different types and ages of forest vegetation gives wildlife more options as weather, food availability, and seasonal needs change.
A Healthy Forest Is More Than Deer Habitat
Good deer habitat rarely benefits deer alone.

Young forest growth can provide nesting and escape cover for birds. Mature trees provide nesting and roosting locations. Native shrubs can produce berries and seeds. Forest openings support flowering plants and insects. Wet areas within or alongside forests provide habitat for amphibians, waterfowl, and other wildlife.
That is one reason responsible forest management is such an important conservation tool.
Wisconsin's forest management guidelines recognize wildlife habitat, biodiversity, water quality, recreation, forest products, and long-term forest health as interconnected considerations in sustainable forest management.
When we manage habitat for diversity rather than a single species, the entire ecosystem can benefit.
